For our last "Gifting" post in the series, I wanted to step back a little. The 2017 holidays are here and as you may have noticed in my last post I'm feeling all the feels. Gifting has gotten a little crazy. To the extent, that family members skip their Thanksgiving meals to go out shopping for "good deals" on material possessions. We always hear "It's the thought that counts"... Though, sometimes we get caught up in the hunt for the "perfect gift".
Deep down, we know the "perfect gift" is spending time with the people (and pets!) that you care about. Showing them that you care and slowing down just to enjoy the little things. A cup of coffee and some small talk (double points for deep conversations!). Instead of a gift card, take them to dinner. Share the experience. Say "Thank you" to the employee that empties your trash. Greet the garbage men with a travel mug full of coffee. Leave baked goods in the mailbox for the mail carrier. Call your parents/siblings/etc. just to say "Hi." Make small talk with the cashier. Say something nice to someone in the check-out line. Send a Thank you note/letter to someone who made your year. Write a love letter and mail it to your partner. Surprise someone at work with a coffee. Leave an inspirational note taped to a restroom mirror. Gifts come in all shapes and sizes. They don't have to break the budget. Sometimes the smallest gestures mean the most. Love, Jenn Rose (Photo by rawpixel.com on Unsplash) We're deep into the holiday spirit, the hustle and bustle and last minute running around. I was blessed to have a few days of relaxation this past weekend. I finished up some holiday decorations and massive cookie making with my little sister. I also made sure to schedule in some solo reflection time. As the end of the year rapidly approaches I always feel better if I can get myself setup for success in the new year. This means journaling on past experiences, really checking in on those goals I set months ago and determining what comes next. Do you have a practice like this? I'd love to hear about it. If not, here are some journaling prompts that can get you started: What Achievements did you accomplish this year? (Give yourself some love! These ARE a big deal.) What Goals did you complete? What goals didn't you complete? WHY? (Don't forget the why! This will help you plan for future goals.) What are you looking forward to in 2018? How do you want to feel in 2018? What steps can you take to feel that way? Hold on to your hats, I'm going to throw in some astrology here! If you're feeling the reflective vibes at this point in the month, you may be noticing the effects of the new moon (tonight!) as well as some of the planetary movements. Saturn is moving into Capricorn and will hang out there until 2020. We're also coming close to the end of another Mercury Retrograde cycle (Thank goodness!). All of these things may be affecting your day and feeling ALL THE FEELS.
I'm with you. Give yourself some time to figure out what you REALLY want in the new year. This is indeed a powerful time with the new moon and the Winter Solstice on Thursday! I'd also wager a night in, wouldn't do us any harm. ;) Sending you love and peace this holiday season! - Jenn Rose (Journal Photo by freestocks.org on Unsplash Moon Photo by Val Vesa on Unsplash) Last time I may have over done it with the essential oils. Ha Ha! Any way here are some other fun ides that you can make at home. Mason Jar Cookie Mix: This is a big hit for co-workers, that you aren't sure what to gift. I mean who doesn't like fresh out of the oven cookies?! Take any cookie recipe you like and layer the dry ingredients in a quart size mason jar (fits most recipes). Make it fancier by adjusting the layers based on colors. For example white flour, then brown sugar, then white sugar, etc. Make sure to print out a small tag that states any wet ingredients that need to be added (eggs, milk/etc.), as well as the oven temperature and how long to bake. Mason Jar Cocoa Mix: Another mason jar?! Yes, I love them. There's two ways you can do this one! You can DIY your cocoa mix recipe and layer the ingredients, like the cookies above. Try a recipe like this one. Or if you're pressed for time buy one of the big mixed cocoa canisters and a bag of mini marsh mellows. Fill up the jar approx 2/3 of cocoa and 1/3 marsh mellows. Tie on a bow and gift away! Want to kick it up a notch? When you tie on that bow, add a small bottle of Irish Cream for your drinking age friends. Get your baking on!
One time I gave everyone in my office mini scones (in a mason jar of course lol). I've also made mini sweet bread loaves for everyone. Pick a recipe you love and make a bunch to share. Tie it up with twine, parchment paper and ribbons. It's the presentation and the taste that makes these DIYs extra special. Happy DIY-ing! - Jenn Rose (Cookie Photo by Charisse Kenion on Unsplash Cocoa Photo by Drew Coffman on Unsplash Sweet Bread Photo by Jennifer Pallian on Unsplash) Last week, I slipped and fell on the tiniest patch of ice. My knee was sore, cut and bleeding. To feel better I thought I would treat myself to a cup of coffee, but on the way I dropped my mug and it shattered... When you're having "A Day" it's hard to feel better. We've already resigned the rest of the day to be a "BAD Day". Making matters worse, we complain to anyone who will listen about our "Bad Day". Sound familiar? If you're having a tough day and feeling bad, you've probably reached the point where you're focusing on the bad things that are happening. Thus making it difficult to be positive to those around you! Now, those negative vibes and "Bad Day" moods are being passed onto others, creating a negative domino effect.
STOP! Give yourself a second to feel it. Go cry in the bathroom at work for two minutes. Let that sh!t go! Then take a deep breathe. Stop and think about something good that happened during the day or this week. Watch a funny video. Think about your lover. Get your mind out of the "bad day" vibes. Get off that negative thought and on to something good. Change your feelings to change your day. It's not easy when you're feeling down, but I know you can do. You are an amazing, beautiful person having an experience. It's up to us how we choose to react to those experiences. Hint: Choosing positive will feel better. ;) Breathing deep, - Jenn Rose (Photo by chuttersnap on Unsplash) |
