Sub-conscious messages. How many of those are floating around in your mind? I like to think of those songs that get stuck in your head and seem to pop up randomly three days later. How often does something seem to pop up out of no where? I think it's often enough to start to gage those things we are filling our minds with on a day to day basis. Let's talk about the songs played on your car radio?
What sort of messages are you putting into that sub-conscious mind of yours? Are you filling it with positive messages or thoughts of not being good enough, thin enough, etc.? Music is a big part of my life, as a dancer/yoga teacher/human being. ;) I'll flip through the radio on my 15-20 minute commute several times to find "the song" to get me going for the day. Lately, I'm shocked by some of the messages we're hearing! Songs about giving up, taking pills to become numb, and even about wanting to die! Really?! I wager that if we listen to these messages long enough, that's where our brains will automatically go. Think about it. We tell our pets "No" about eating our shoes/jumping on the table/etc. Eventually they learn not to do it. Children are told not to touch the hot stove, run out into traffic, etc. Eventually they learn not to do those things. Of course those may be extreme examples... However if we play a song on repeat day in and day out, those messages become a part of your growth. Think, hearing "No" over and over, but this time it's "Don't worry, be happy", etc. I encourage us all to take a second to check in and really notice what we are teaching ourselves during those car rides.
